Project management goes a long way back.

It’s mindboggling when you consider the complexity a project such as the Great Pyramid of Giza must have been. The pyramids were designed roughly around 2570 BC, and people are still arguing how they completed such a huge project.

The Great Wall of China is no different. It was developed in 208 BC. We wouldn’t want to dream about taking on a project of such a scale without the help from a specialized tool.

But technological advancements changed everything.

First Steps

Some significant advancements in Project Management happened as time passed. Gantt Charts were introduced in 1917 and the Critical Path saw the light of day in 1957.

But nobody prepared the world of project management for the shake-up the introduction of computers would cause.  After the first steps that were taken by Artemis  and Oracle with their project manager systems in 1977, low cost PC’s meant that a project no longer needed to be managed on a piece of paper.

Modern Times

Fast forward to the eighties and nineties and the concept of project management software development became widely accepted.   Features like project cost and project scope (called ‘Earned Value Method’) were added and project processes slowly increased in number from five to seven and beyond.

The fast evolving IT world, gave developers new insights. Networking facilities and access to personal computers made complex projects much easier to handle. Big projects like the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger and the ambitious England-France Channel Project paved the way for the rest of the project management world.

In 2001 Agile was introduced, allowing for flexibility and adaptive processes.

Developments in the Age of the Internet

Once the Internet arrived on the scene in the 1990s, it allowed people to track assignments and project details on the go and the world of Project Management changed again.

The concept of Cloud-based Project Management was introduced in 2010. People no longer needed to be in the same place to be on the same team. Any place and any device would do the trick and virtual teams were born. Mobile apps became a much-desired feature for managing projects and tasks while out in the field, and this page is a great example of a field service management app.

These days, the Internet of Things is predicted to be responsible for the next shake up.
